I'm trying to compile a list of all large format films that have been nominated for Academy Awards. Anyone care to help me out? Please note, I'm shooting for films that were actually nominated... not that I thought should be nominated. Thanks! Rainbow War Alaska Amazon |

| Looking for the names of large-format films nominated in previous years as well. Thanks for the link. |

| I believe that both Special Effects and The Living Sea were both nominated - in what categories I have no idea, but I will check my sources and get back to you with more info. |

| Both Special Effects and Cosmic Voyage were nominated in the same year. Fires of Kuwait was also a nominee. |

OK, I got lots of responses from people I asked about large format Oscar nominees. But finally there was nothing to do but go to the Academy's website and search under Documentary (short subject). Here is the list I came up with, possibly still incomplete. Just eight of them. I didn't include 5/70 films. By the way, the only large format film on the "eligible for nomination" list for 1998 is Everest. FYI, the company with the most nominations is Graphic Films. Alaska (1997) Amazon (1997) Cosmic Voyage (1996) Fires of Kuwait (1992) The Eruption of Mt. St. Helens (1980) Special Effects (1996) The Living Sea (1995) Rainbow War (1986) Does anyone know if Planet Ocean or Probes in Space were 5/70 or 15/70? Both were nominated; both from Graphic Films. Francis Thompson's City Out of Wilderness was also nominated; anyone know if that was large format or not? |

I see you got the information you wanted about Oscar nominations. I was going to tell you about Alaska: Spirit of the Wild, featuring narration by The Voice of God, but you already got that info. My people, the Houston Museum of Natural Science, produced that one. Yee-haw. I really think we would have actually taken the Oscar, but a gripping tale of cancer survival or something won the short subject documentary. I was watching the awards and I knew as soon as I saw the nominee clips we would lose to the cancer. Alaska, even with the Voice of God, can't get votes against a cancer tale. Oh well. We've got Migrations coming out before too long. We'll see how it goes. Africa: The Serengeti was narrated by James Earl Jones. Alaska: Spirit of the Wild was narrated by The Voice of God (Chuck Heston) Migrations should be narrated by Isaac Hayes. Jason |
