Today, the Imax Corporation unveiled a plan to take their company in a new direction, releasing information concerning their plan to tap into a brand-new entertainment market.

"Were calling it 'Personal IMAX'", a company spokesperson said.

The plan involves a new technology which will put the user on a one-on-one level with the film. Dubbed IMAX 3D WALKMAN, the format involves a surround system which fits over the user's head. It incorporates the liquid-crystal eyepieces currently in use at the larger 3D theaters, and combines it with a revolutionary new film format. The transport system for the film straps onto the user's back, and instead of projecting an image it literally runs the film right in front of each eyeball, with a separate print for each eye. The revolutionary new film is 8 millimeters wide and perforated only on one edge, and is powered by a new 15-watt Xenon arc-lamp which is air cooled by the user's breath (via a scuba-like mouthpiece the user wears).

"We feel this will take cinema in a whole new direction," the spokesperson said. "Now, you don't have to worry about someone kicking the back of your chair. You don't have to concern yourself with show times, or parking facilities at your local educational institution or megamall. Hell, you don't even have to dress yourself; you just strap it on and enjoy."

Reports are that Iwerks is developing a similar system, using a horizontal transport device instead of a vertical. Also, the Iwerks unit will have black feet on the supports, not white.

The film library is expected to be just as diverse as it is for the larger format films. MacGillivray-Freeman Films have already announced plans for a new nature series of films designed to take special advantage of the format. Initial titles will include "One House Guest" (about a single roach), "Gnats", and "Flea! Back to the Shag Rug" (which will follow the adventures of one young flea as it learns about prehistoric dogs).

Upon announcing this new plan, Imax stock jumped 500%, and rumors of a Disney takeover have begun.

(This fictitious report was compiled strictly and spontaneously from the typer's brain, a result of the calendar date and four cups of coffee this morning. Any resemblance to actual companies, living or dead, is purely coincidental. No animals were harmed in the making of this posting.)

And don't forget this convenient alternative to late-night cable TV...given the fact that this new revolutionary "personal" film format is one-on-one viewing, and can be enjoyed without the viewer ever having to leave home or even get dressed, one can now enjoy quality adult entertainment such as the new release by Mirama-XXX, "Shaving Ryan's Privates".

New format is not quite right
I'm not sure what to make of the first item in this chain. I somehow believe the writer presented the information in jest. In actuality, the new IMAX product uses an electronic reproduction system, in which traditional 65mm film negatives are printed down and stored to a 1/2" wide magnetic tape.
Prototypes of the system are currently in beta testing. I believe the new product will be called BetaIMAX, or possibly betamax.
